Summer Music Program 2020
The Laney Jazz Intensive
The Laney Jazz Intensive is a 2 week program that provides students of all ages (junior high, high school, and adult students) an opportunity to work with director John Gove and an extraordinary staff of professional jazz musicians to focus on improving their jazz skills in a variety of ways. Daily activities will include full ensemble rehearsals playing original arrangements written for the Jazz Intensive program, jazz improvisation skills practice sessions, improvisation practice in small groups, and various electives offered by the staff of jazz professionals (electives such as jazz arranging, jazz theory, jazz history, Brazilian/Cuban drumming for all musicians, advanced improvisation concepts, guided listening to jazz recordings, etc.).
The program is designed for all ages and open to all musicians with at least 2 years of study on their respective instrument. No previous jazz experience is required and we will meet you at your level and take you to new heights. The program will conclude with a noon concert on Thursday June 25th.
Laney College has always been a source of affordable high quality jazz instruction and we are proud to offer this two week opportunity for a total fee of $350.00. In order to have the best staff available we must have all participants enrolled by June 1st. Scholarships are available in some situations--please send inquiries to John Gove at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Location - Get Directions
The Laney College Music Department offers an ideal creative summer experience! Located in the heart of the Arts Center of Oakland, only steps away from the Oakland Art Museum and the Calvin Simmons Theater and adjacent to the Lake Merrit BART station, students can commute from anywhere in the greater Bay Area. You do not have to leave town or stay over night or eat camp food to have a great musical summer. The Laney College Music Department and the Laney Theater are back to back and all large rehearsals will take place right on the stage that the performances will occur. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to experience the acoustics of a professional theater. Click here for a map.
The Laney Campus Cafeteria will be open all summer for students to purchase lunch or students may opt to bring their own lunch. Students are well supervised, with roll taken at each activity and faculty are always available in the student cafeteria.
When You Arrive...
On the first day of each session students should arrive at 8:45am. Signs will be posted at the 9th and Fallon St. Entrance to Laney College and Counselors and Staff will greet students near the flag pole with directions to the nearby theater and music department. Plan to pick up students at the flagpole at 3:00pm, unless they are taking public transportation.
The noon concerts on the last day of the session (Thursday the 25th) is always one of the highlights of the two week summer experience. The public is invited to hear the fruits of the intense two week music rehearsals at a concert held on the Laney Campus in the Theater. Admission is free.
